Clapham History

As with many areas surrounding London, Clapham was once dedicated to the agriculture industry, yet its attractive landscapes and close proximity to London caught the attention of wealthy merchants from the City of London in the late 17th century. At that point, rich landowners began to build large country houses and villas in the area surrounding Clapham Common – many of which still exist to this day. With the dawn of the railways in the 20th century, Clapham became an affordable commuter suburb for a larger number of Londoners; a position it still enjoys today.
