Since Covid changed the way we live, being within walking distance of a park or green space has gone from being a ‘nice-to-have’ to a ‘must-have’ for property buyers. According to a 2017 study by the World Health Organisation, urban green spaces can promote mental and physical health, alleviating stress and supporting physical activity. Urban parks are the primary source of green space for Londoners and so we’ve picked 10 homes within walking distance of a South London Park on the market right now…
1. Clapham Common
Clapham Common is one of South London’s most famous and oldest green spaces spanning between Clapham, Battersea and Balham. At the centre of its 220-acre expanse is a bandstand regenerated in 2005 to its former glory. Aside from its copious green spaces, old trees, and other flora, it is home to three ponds, two of which are used for angling, and a variety of sporting facilities including a running track, bowling green, cricket and football pitches and a skateboard venue. Clapham Common is also host to numerous music festivals including Colourscape and Eurodance and other annual events, giving it a reputation for lively summer fun.

2. Elephant Park
Elephant Park is at the heart of the regeneration of Elephant and Castle and is the largest new green space to be developed in London for 70 years. Developed as a 2-acre green hub around which the regeneration of the area could be focused, the first phase of Elephant Park opened in 2017 providing residents with sweeping lawn areas, natural play spaces and retail outlets from coffee shops to street food set seamlessly along its boundary. The Park remains under development with a soon to complete landmark Pavilion centred around a London plane tree that will offer food and beverage kiosks, a function room and an immense roof terrace from which to enjoy views of the local area.

Putney Heath is unlike the other parks in our list and is characterised by sprawling heathland strewn with clusters of large trees. It is popular with dog walkers and ramblers. One of the least cultivated parklands on the list, the 400-acre Putney Heath provides a natural environment with an abundance of history where you might once have witnessed Charles II running horses, a duel between Brydges and Compton or the capture of notorious highwayman Abershaw in the Green Man pub. The village green to the northeast corner of Putney Heath is home to the Roehampton Cricket Club.

8. Kennington Park
The remnants of Kennington Common, this public park was created in the mid-19th Century. Kennington Common was the location of the 1848 Chartist Rally as well as being famed as a platform for orators from a variety of backgrounds and causes. For cricket buffs, the park remains a must-visit as one of the earliest London cricket venues. Today, for sports and fitness enthusiasts, the park is home to a Fitness Trail, tennis courts and Astroturf pitches for football and netball as well as cricket and other grass sports pitches. The Old English Flower Garden has been caringly restored and sits at the core of Kennington Park, a beautiful area to relax and enjoy nature in the city. Perhaps this is the reason that Bee Urban chose the park as its base from which it promotes ecologically sound urban farming, in particular bee keeping. A new playground was opened in 2008 and a café also creates a hub around which residents gather.
