The best places to eat in Greenwich, South East London

One of the most charming things about living in an area like Greenwich is that even among all the hustle and bustle of London life, you can still find that little place that feels rural, like a little town or village. However, while Greenwich has that homely feel to it, those living in the area can still find a surprisingly varied range of options when it comes to eating out.

There are a great many different cuisines on offer from around the world, and here, we take a look at some of the very best options for eating out in Greenwich.

Goddard's at Greenwich

Is there anything that screams traditional London like pie and mash? We don't think so, and there are very few places in the capital that will allow you to enjoy this dish quite as well as Goddard's at Greenwich. A family-owned business, Goddard's has been serving pie and mash since the late 19th century. With such an institution right there on your doorstep, it would be rude not to stop off and try it out.

Inside

We continue our tour of Greenwich's finest eateries by moving from its oldest restaurant to one that is generally considered to be the best in the area. Run by chef Guy Awford, this restaurant comprises a compact and attractive interior wherein you can enjoy some of the finest cuisine in the capital.

It's generally considered to be quite a hip and trendy place to dine for locals, so expect modernity and class to shine through if you should decide to visit. It's even been recommended in recent times in Michelin's good food guide.

Rivington Grill

Situated right next door to the Greenwich Picturehouse, this is the perfect place to enjoy after a night out after you've taken in one of the latest blockbuster movies on offer. The inside of Rivington Grill feels warm and homely, and the menu consists of a range of modern British cuisine, with a focus on fresh menu items and local products.

On the warmer summer nights, there's even a roof terrace to allow for some al fresco dining.

The Hill

From fine foods to fine wines, The Hill is a perfect place for diners who enjoy the perusal of a good wine list and having the chance to select their favourite bottle. With a range of old and new to select from, this is the perfect place for Greenwich-based oenophiles. It's not just the wine that will delight diners, though, with The Hill also well known for its wonderful range of Mediterranean cuisine. The menu includes such delights as tricolore salads, hand-carved Iberico ham, escargots, pastas, pizzas and a range of chicken dishes.

The owners also delve into their own culture from time to time as well. Hailing from Columbia themselves, you will often find the weekly specials taking on a distinctly more South American flavour than the standard menu.

The Guildford Arms

Our next stop takes us to the Guildford Arms. While gastro pubs might not be the sort of thing you're looking for, this one is certainly worth taking the time to check out. It's even managed to make its way onto the Time Out top lists for places to eat in London in the last few years. The pub has a varied menu throughout the year, with the chef adapting offerings in order to get the best of in-season products.

Diners can either eat in the bar itself, or on a warmer day take to the wonderful sunken garden outside, where they can enjoy a fantastic meal in the open air.

Black Vanilla

And finally, what food guide would truly be complete without some fantastic treats to top it all off? We make our final stop at Black Vanilla, a little shop that is perfectly situated alongside some of Greenwich's most famous landmarks, including the likes of Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College and Greenwich indoor market.

While you're enjoying your fantastic river views down in the south-east of London, this little gem will serve up the perfect accompaniment in the shape of sorbets and a real selection of different ice creams. There's a reason Black Vanilla is becoming more and more popular all the time.
